Pittsburgh writer/musician L.E. McCullough, Ph.D. has made an astonishing amount of Art over the years.
And — through his parallel work as a journalist, publicist, arts administrator and planner — he has helped thousands of other Artists achieve their dreams and market their artistry to the world.
As a writer of poetry, fiction and drama, his work has crossed innumerable stylistic and demographic boundaries; he has had 183 poem and story publications in 93 North American literary journals and won 47 awards in 33 regional and national literary competitions. His first produced play, Blues for Miss Buttercup, debuted in New York in 1995 and won the Urban Stages Emerging Playwrights Award. He has written and published scores of commercial audiobooks, filmscripts and radio plays.
Dr. McCullough has written and published 27 theatre books (including 189 original plays and 333 original monologues) that have established him as a leader in the field of contemporary Children’s & Educational Theatre … since 1999 his Plays of America for Young Actors book has been named to Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Recommended Reading List alongside works like To Kill a Mocking Bird, Great Expectations, Lord of the Flies and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
A versatile multi-instrumentalist and performer fluent in several musical languages from Cajun to Irish to bluegrass to salsa and rock, Dr. McCullough has recorded on 52 albums … composed scores for ballet, film, theatre, television and radio … performed at hundreds of festivals, television and radio programs and even at the White House for President Bill Clinton.
As a scholar, he has authored music instruction books, cassettes and videos along with books on music business, children’s theatre production and the history of Cabaret. He has been a recognized leader in the field of Irish music performance, scholarship and teaching for more than three decades. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council and Pennsylvania Council on the the Arts and sat twice as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Humanities.
As a teacher, he has transmitted his experience and expertise to thousands of others, teaching dozens of seminars, workshops and university classes for children and adults in music, writing, play production and arts marketing, public relations, management and administration.
As an arts journalist, he has published over 1,200 articles in local, regional and national media that have had as their primary purpose the advocacy of Arts and Artists in every field of endeavor. His arts journalism has won several awards, including the Texas Music Association Distinguished Merit Award for Media Support and two consecutive Arts Indiana Penrod Writers Awards for Best Arts Reporting.
And as a publicist, fundraiser and arts administrator for scores of community causes and nonprofits, L.E. McCullough has worked successfully to aid others in their efforts to make the world a more Artistic place — helping to organize and market dozens of festivals, conferences, workshops and community fundraisers across the U.S.
